A few haiku from last months of 2021

Oct 3

four of us squeeze in
the safety bar is lowered
caponera ride!

Oct 6

today don Victor,
the plumber, shared change with me
at the cooked beans stand

Oct 10

tonight is cloudy
we look up for stars and find
only memories

Oct 11

tiny sea turtles
slowly crawl across the sand
into the ocean

Oct 12

much is in her mind
as she tells her own stories
not bound by books' words

Oct 23

so how many times
did we almost miss our flight?
let me count the ways

Nov 2

I talked to Grampop
his voice was strong on the phone
he told his story

Nov 8

up on a ladder
with two brooms tied together
we reached the frisbee

Nov 9

the doors are swaying
the ground moves under our feet
what more might follow?

Nov 9

Miriam and I
solved the Case of Missing Tape
by buying new tape

Nov 14

for both their birthdays,
Lorena, Marvin's widow,
brought two cakes to share

Nov 19

with one arm, he begs
I see his shirt reads: "The church
has left the building"

Nov 23

she tells of her son
heading north to the border
hoping to get through

Nov 25

I may not have learned
to avoid fines, but I've learned
the payment process

Dec 3

trumpets and guitars,
harmonies - "¡Ay, ay, ay, ay!"
a birthday surprise!

Dec 7

for love of Mary
doors open between strangers
who share songs and gifts

[Purísima]

Dec 8

we watch morning birds
among them, an oriole,
orange and black, appears

Dec 11

Miriam brings me
yellow paper, and shows me
how to fold a boat

Dec 14

Lia and Grandpa
mixed and flipped breakfast pancakes
before we were up

Dec 15

pumping fuel, he asks:
is it true there's a new way
to go to the States?

Dec 27

we turn off the fan
Miriam's birthday cupcake
number five candle

A few haiku from August and September

we dash to the gate hearing the brass and drums for
Santo Domingo

Doña Yolanda, thinking of what the kids like,
makes repocheta

car break-downs and bumps slow Carretera Sur's flow;
the sunset glows though

"who causes such joy?" "the assumption of Mary!" neighbors cheer tonight

[Gritería chiquita]

it's over 90 in the house, my forehead drips
why am I baking?

light flashed, thunder rolled, rain poured on our metal roof--
now, only slow drips

I had told our guests I'd do the dishes later
but they still washed them

two days into school already being tested
this one's negative

we're so glad she's back from her Río Coco trip
we got ice cream cones

life's full of puzzles the weekend is a good time
for one in a box

an old taxi man opens the broken car door
and tells me stories

a volcanic rock our big, craggy roadside friend
is ground down for fill

the evening bread man pedals his bike cart, whistles,
and calls, "¡trae pan!"

it's the day to light nine candles on a cupcake
happy birthday, son

these old petroglyphs-- solemn, regal stone figures-- have us wondering

[Granada, Nicaragua]

he paints the planets fourth grade history project
we see that it's good

here's a fancy place now with their own leaky roof
like everyone else

he's got bread to sell says, "you didn't believe me!"
true, he surprised me

my bike had a flat got a caponera ride
a friend gave me change

today I'm thankful Yahaira taught our daughter
to make tortillas

best moment today was seeing how our youngest
cuts a paper star

fresh nacatamal leaf-wrapped and tied up with string
a favorite thing
